It includes thoughts, emotions, sensations, perceptions, and even states of unconsciousness or deep sleep.

Awareness is the knowing quality within consciousness – the capacity to recognize or perceive what’s arising in the field of consciousness. It’s the focused attention or luminous knowing that can be present or absent within the broader field.

Think of consciousness as the ocean and awareness as the quality of light that can illuminate different depths and areas of that ocean.

The Yin Yang Symbol and the Self

The Yin Yang symbol is a beautiful visual representation of the Self and the interrelationship between the four aspects revealed in the Self Realization Mantra.

The Iself is a differentiated focal point of unconsciousness arising within consciousness.

The Allself is undifferentiated consciousness manifesting as a field of awareness.

The Godself is a differentiated focal point of consciousness arising within unconsciousness.

The Noself is undifferentiated unconsciousness manifesting as a field of unawareness.

The Iself and Godself represent the fundamental focal points out of which the relative experiences of duality and separation first emerge – the active and passive principles of manifestation and individuation.

The white yang area denotes the Allself – the radiant, interconnected web of universal consciousness. The black yin area symbolizes the Noself – the formless, fertile void from which all arises and returns.

Paradoxically, while the Noself is characterized by absolute emptiness, it is simultaneously the primordial womb that births all forms, including the vast expanse of the phenomenal Allself.

The centering dots of Iself and Godself within each swirl illustrate that individuation and divine presence coexist inseparably across all scales of manifestation.

The symbol reveals a beautiful truth: the Iself (black dot) and Noself (black field) are the same essential substance – individual consciousness and emptiness sharing the same mysterious nature. The Godself (white dot) and Allself (white field) are also the same substance – divine presence and universal awareness expressing the same luminous reality. What appears as opposites are actually intimate expressions of the same fundamental essence.

This image reflects the nondual understanding that there is only one unbroken reality expressing itself as a ceaseless flow between these polarities – from unity to multiplicity, from boundlessness to particularity.

The journey revealed is to allow identification with any single state or perspective to open into the dynamic mandala of consciousness ceaselessly modulating through all possible expressions and modes of being – while recognizing our true nature as the infinite potential embracing all forms within its mystery.

Understanding Consciousness and Awareness Before exploring this symbol, let’s revisit the subtle but important distinction between consciousness and awareness that underlies this entire framework: Consciousness is the broader, all-encompassing field of existence – the fundamental canvas upon which all experiences are painted.
